a ballpark figure: an approximate number; an estimate. 야구 경기장의 사람 숫자 세듯이 대략적인 숫자.

Can you give us a ballpark figure of our projected losses in the quarter?  losses 발음 '라시스'라고 해야함. '루시스' 아님.

 

come up with: suggest or think of an idea or plan

Nobody could come up with a satisfactory explanation for the accident. satisfactory: 만족스러운

 

shape up: develop in a particular way; to improve. 태도를 개선하다. 더 열심히 일하다. (특히 좋은 방향으로) 되어 가다.

This group of summer interns is shaping up to be one of the best we have ever hired.

 

hammer out: arrive at an agreement or solution after a lot of argument or discussion. 오랜 논쟁 끝에 합의함. 망치들고 밖으로 나가서 위협해서 논쟁을 해결한다고 상상함.

We had been arguing about the issue for weeks, so the four of us got together to hammer it out.

 

of all time: the best or most successful that has ever lived or existed

GOAT: Greatest of All Time

Luke Hutchison is the greatest singer of all time.

 

Dialogue

A: I’ve called this meeting to brainstorm some fundraising ideas. As you know, we’re in danger of closing. Any thoughts?

B: I thought that Jon was working on getting donors.

 

A: He is, but we can’t count on that coming through. count on: 기대하다. come through: 해내다.

C: How much do we need to raise? What’s a ballpark figure?

 

A: We need at least $100,000 for the following fiscal year.

B: That’s a lot of money, but I think we’ll come up with something. How does a benefit performance sound?

D: Oh, so all the takings can go to raise money! That sounds promising. Who can we get to perform?

 

A: It would be great to get someone like Luke Hutchison, the greatest singer of all time.

B: I think we’re shooting too high. I was thinking more like a local band. shooting high: 목적을 너무 높게 설정함.

D: I’ve got it. My sister knows some local bands from this area. Maybe we can get a few of them to perform.

B: That would be great.

 

A: I like how this is shaping up. We’re out of time, but let’s meet again on Friday to hammer out the details. Thanks everybody.
