We cannot do anything more since we are already up to our necks.

 

short-handed: not having the usual or necessary number of workers

Why is the boss talking about making cutbacks at a time when we are already short-handed.

cutbacks: 감축

 

break the rule: do something against the policies

You should not break the rules at work to suit your own needs and interests.

 

second-hand smoke: unwanted smoke that people breathe in from cigarettes, etc. that other people are smoking

Second-hand smoke is supposed to be worse for your health than smoking.

Better: I think that's whey coampnies pay engineers a high salary.

 

Original: I have to turn on my computer and try to fix it, and sometimes the job can be fixed at 6 a.m.

Better: Regardless of the time, I have to switch my computer on and try to fix the problem, and sometimes it can take all night and only be fixed at 6 a.m.
